I got the students to fill out the survey and was interested in what they said. It was a very mixed response. It was an even spread over those who enjoy reading for fun and those who do not enjoy it. Anime, graphic novels and fantasy novels.
I found it interesting that students don't go to the library to get books out especially as we are so close to a public library.
Their response to the My Teacher Thinks I am a Good Reader was interesting as it was quite even over the board.
It did make me wonder, what do they interpret this as?
What would that sound like or look like for them to be considered a good reader by a teacher?
Their understanding of what makes a good reader is something that I will need to address as they had a very mixed understanding of this.
My next step will be exploring the books that the students enjoy and finding a way to engage those who don't enjoy reading for fun (will this be using audio books, magazines on topics of interest etc).
I would like to try a taste-testing activity or a book recommendation activity.
